If you're thinking about taking up jogging to get in shape...you may want to think again. There are many exercises to help lose 15 pounds but face it jogging is a danger to your body, and it will not cause you to lose fat.
Did you see the story on ESPN about Robert Kraft - known to his fans as "Raven"? He has jogged 8 miles on Miami Beach every day for the last 34 years. On March 29, 2009, he hit an epic milestone; 100,000 miles of jogging.

Now that's dedication! It was a great story. Except... At just 58 years old, Raven moves and looks like he's 98. He has constant complaints of
• Back pain
• Knee pain
• Foot pain
• Neck pain
• Sciatica
• Hip pain

During the show he admitted to barely being able to get out of bed in the morning. And just walking out of his bedroom was a major feat.

Raven is not alone, injury and intense pain is extremely common among long distance runners as well as daily joggers. Especially those who jog on cement and asphalt.


To prove my point take a look at the most read articles on the Runner's World website. It seems like every other one is a tip on how to deal with jogging-related injuries:

• "Painful Thoughts: When your body pleads with you to stop, your mind can keep you going"

Bottom Line: Jogging is a good way to destroy your body. Not only that but one of the reasons many people start jogging is because they want to lose weight. Just the physiology of jogging may lose some pounds (mostly water weight and muscle weight) but unfortunately jogging will cause you to actually store more FAT. Hardly what you had in mind!

I would never advise anyone to use jogging for any reason. If you want to get into phenomenal shape there is a good number of fantastic exercises I would recommend, and the good news is... they only take 15 minutes per day and can be done in the privacy of your own home. In fact you can burn fat quickly and pack on muscle without hours in the gym.


If you have your heart set on running, hear is your best option. Run brief sprints, run hard and fast for 30 - 60 seconds then rest for 1 minute taking in deep breaths, now sprint again for 30 -60 seconds. Continue this process for 5 - 10 reps. By switching from long duration runs and jogging to the above exercise you will see increased lung volume, a stronger heart, and a more lean body. I do advise you to spend 1 - 2 minutes of stretching both before and after your session to prevent injury.
Tailor your sprint time and rest time to your level of conditioning. You should be panting at the end of each sprint period, but you should not reach complete exhaustion. As you gradually increase the exercise intensity, your body will respond.
